Gold vermeil

Vermeil is a technique originating in the 19th century, where gold is applied to sterling silver. Gold vermeil is made in a similar style to gold plating but requires a thicker layer of gold. The gold layer must be above 2.5 microns, creating a finish that is five times thicker than average gold plating, and far more durable.  My pendants and earrings are coated with 3 microns and bangles and rings with 5 microns of 18 carat gold.

Gold vermeil is an affordable alternative to solid gold jewellery. In a nutshell, it’s the design and durability you love without the solid gold price tag.

Gold plating is a process where a thin layer of gold is electrochemically bonded to a base metal, typically brass or copper.  

Gold vermeil pieces often have a richer, more lustrous finish compared to gold-plated jewelry. The substantial gold layer provides a depth and brilliance that is closer to solid gold, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal. 

Gold-plated jewelry, while still attractive, may not achieve the same level of luster and may show the base metal through thin areas over time. This difference in finish quality makes vermeil a preferred choice for those seeking a luxurious look with more logevity. 

As with any plated jewellery, the plating will wear over time. But due to the far thicker layer applied to vermeil gold when compared to gold-plated jewellery, the process takes longer. With the right care, you can enjoy your gorgeous gold vermeil jewellery for many years to come. When you’re not wearing your jewellery, keep it stored in an air-tight container or bag and always out of direct sunlight to avoid natural tarnishing. 

Always remove your gold vermeil jewellery before washing your hands, swimming or showering. There are harsh chemicals in swimming pools that will speed up the wear process and likewise, even shower and tap water is treated with chemicals to make it safe for human contact and consumption, so to be on the safe side, keep your gold vermeil jewellery dry.

As I need to send the pieces off to be plated, please allow 7-10 days for any order. Please note that if the piece needs to be hallmarked as well it will take longer and I will let you know timings when you order if that's the case.
